The Five Components of Rockford Sexual Assault Counseling

  • Crisis Intervention - This may be at the time the victim is receiving emergency medical care but it can also be months or even years later. It is whenever memories and feelings of the assault/abuse start to resurface and is often accompanied by feelings of confusion, insecurity and panic. Assistance is available 24 hours a day.
  • Counseling - Individual and group. Surviving sexual abuse or assault is only half the battle, dealing with the visible or emotional damage requires a good supportive team experienced in sexual trauma. More information.
  • Legal Advocacy - Should the victim of sexual assault or abuse decide to prosecute the perpetrator, the RSAC legal advocate can be a great source of support. Their knowledge and experience with the legal system helps to prepare the victim for the court process.
  • Education and Professional Training - Public speaking in the schools, business, churches and social service agencies.
  • Volunteer Opportunities - A comprehensive 40 hour training course to educate individuals on how to best respond to the needs of the clients. More information.

Why is counseling important?
Sexual abuse/assault is a traumatic event and sometimes it can take years to heal. Our body/mind temporarily allows us to suppress or feel numb as it copes with the tramatic event. Often the trauma is so painful that we are not equipped to resolve it soon after the event. This is especially true for the child who has been sexually abused and often times still lives in the same dangerous environment. Painful feelings, nightmares, flashback and various other effects often surface years after the actual trauma.

How much will it cost?
There is no fee for children 0-17. As an adult, one can receive up to ten counseling sessions free of charge. All sessions will be charged on a sliding base scale. Legal/medical advocacy, and public education are free of charge. Donations are accepted for professional training.
