ST MICHAEL'S CEMETERY - EST 1840s

East Galena Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois

St. Michael's Cemetery is located on Hwy 20 a short distance east of the Galena River bridge. It was established in the 1840s. This cemetery serviced the members of St. Michael's Church. St. Michael's Church was the preferred church of the Irish population in early Galena. The records were destroyed in a a fire in the early 1920s so unless there was a readable stone, some records are gone. It is also rumored that there are possibly three layers of burials in some sections.

The listings of the burials of St. Mary's Cemetery are posted on Rootsweb. The link is here. Be aware that they have many annoying pop-up ads to pay for their free information. It is part of Rootsweb - NOT ComPortOne.
